BUY – Off to Market
A Ugandan minibus, a steep hill and lots of people wanting to get off to market.
Keb helps everyone aboard Joe’s bus. There are people with goats and chickens, watermelons and rugs. Everyone has something to sell at the marketplace.
The minibus is so full some people have to sit on the roof with the luggage. Keb squeezes in with the goats at the back of the bus and perched on top of the boxes.
A cloud of fumes and they’re off to market. But when the biggest hill proves too steep everyone has to get out. How will they get to market on time?
Keb’s determination saves the day and the grateful passengers buy him a really special treat!
A delightful rhyming story full of colour and movement of African animals and landscapes. The people’s faces are supremely expressive and perfectly represent the characters you might encounter in an African village.
The illustrations are cleverly crafted showing the changing moods of the crammed passengers. Best of all the exuberance and vibrancy of colour transports the reader into the heart of African culture.
A splendid story of friendship and community.

Elizabeth Dale was inspired to write her recently published book ‘Off to Market’, when she visited one of her daughters in Uganda and experienced the joy of riding on a matatu (an African minibus) with every type of animal and possession imaginable crammed in with her.
