This famous story of environmental destruction for the purpose of economic gain, brings into the spotlight one of the most serious issues of our age.
Written and illustrated in Dr Seuss’ fantastical style, The Lorax offers the inspiring message, to make a difference if you care.
Have you heard the story of the lifted Lorax? He lifted himself away as there was no one else to speak up for. Why was he there and who was he protecting?
Whispered down a rickety pipe to the ears of a curious boy, the lonely old Once-ler tells the tale, for it was he who brought destruction to the fabulous lush valley where the Truffula trees once grew.
When the Once-ler arrived he didn’t think about what might happen…he saw an opportunity…he wanted to make money…and he did so with Thneeds.
What luck! The fluffy tuft of the Truffula tree was perfect to knit a Thneed…but to get the tuft he cut down the tree.
When the first tree fell, the Lorax, a guardian of nature magically appeared.
His warnings and pleas to stop destroying the valley were brushed aside by the greed driven Once-ler.
All he wanted was to knit more Thneeds, so he built a factory.
As with any ecosystem, once the balance is disrupted things can get wildly out of hand.
As the pollution and destruction continues, the Lorax sends the Ba-bar-loot bears away because there is no more food. The Swannee swans can’t sing through the smog and the Humming fish can’t hum in the polluted water. Everyone must go if they want to survive.
Children’s eyes will open wide as the last Truffula tree is cut down and perhaps question WHY NOBODY CARED ENOUGH to stop this terrible thing happening.
With nothing left to protect the Lorax lifts himself away leaving only one word…”UNLESS”… a call to all the children and adults who read this book, who DO CARE.
Because UNLESS there are people willing to help sustain and protect ecological balance, our world may end up like the valley, polluted and uninhabitable.
Like this message, a last seed of hope, the last Truffula seed is entrusted to the boy, the child who has just finished listening to the old Onceler’s story.
A bell ringer! One of Dr Zeuss’ most powerful stories.
