A fun little fairy tale about the downfalls of showing off!
When a dragon descends upon the kingdom the resident knight prepares for battle.
But where is his helmet with the plume and how could he possibly wear a cloak that does not match!
The knight is desperate to show how daring and brave he is, especially to the princess.
However his jousting and vain antics do not impress her one bit.
The princess is much more interested with the knight’s squire, who dashes about fulfilling his master’s demands.
Kids will enjoy the playful illustrations, which show all sorts of subtle interactions and little jokes going on around the palace. The princess can be spied collecting a few pieces of armour for herself.
Finally the knight looks marvelous! The favoured armour is however extremely heavy, the visor difficult to see through and he keeps tripping on his splendid cape.
When finally the knight rides forth, he finds he’s missed the moment completely.
Turns out he’s not needed as the princess has tamed the dragon.
She also marries the squire and leaves on the dragon! Ha Ha!
A nice bit of role reversal and a caution against being too full of yourself!
James Mayhew is also the award winning author of the well-known ‘Katie’ series, which introduces the work of famous artists to children.
