Find and discover are the simple yet powerful devices in this delightful wildlife narrative.
On a walk in the long grass by the river we meet a number of creatures who tell us something about themselves.
The text is large to encourage easy word identification. The illustrations have friendly faces, are simple and free from overly bright colouring.
The second to last page features the open jaws and head of a pop up lion. I was surprised and laughed aloud the first time I read it as I was holding the book close to my face.
The front cover and the page before alerts young readers to the lion. The blub on the back of the book alerts parents to the surprise awaiting.
The lion is quite friendly looking when you shut its mouth, but I can imagine a few very young kids might be petrified of this. Some parents may choose to move past this page to the final one. Other kids will love it and roar in delight as they become more familiar with the book.
The final page has a gentle closure, reviewing and counting the animals.
Tactfully, the lion is hidden under a flip up flap, so that timid readers can cautiously learn to see the lion too.
The title ‘It’s Mine’ is thankfully about positive ownership and wild places.

Rod sees himself as a ‘maker’ of books rather than as an author or illustrator. He uses flaps or pop-ups in a book only when he feels they give an extra dimension to a simple story or when they will serve to enhance the ‘reality’ of certain images. For the youngest he believes that a degree of physical involvement is crucial in drawing the child into books, and maintaining their interest.
