Polly Alakija
Polly Alakija was born in 1966, in Malvern She studying art at the Oxford Polytechnic and later completed a teaching diploma in the Montessori method.
In 1990 she moved to Nigeria and got married. In 2005 she relocated to South Africa. Her rich Africa experiences are evident in the expressive details of her children’s book illustrations.
As well as pursuing her own art career, she has involved herself actively in community related art projects and painting. She spent time visited schools in the UK, Nigeria and South Africa, reading with the children and sharing her experience of building picture books.
As a trained Montessori teacher Polly has been actively engaged in the classroom and in running creative workshops for children as young as 3 years, through the primary and secondary years, to working with post graduate students and training primary school teachers.
As an artist she has exhibited in France, the UK, the University of Ibadan, Lagos, Johannesburg and Cape Town. St Cyprians School Ballet used her beautiful artwork for sets and props for a ballet – choreographed by Sue De Moyencourt.
Her other children’s book titles include, ‘The Road To Market’, ‘Catch That Goat’, ‘The Oba Is Coming’ and ‘A Stork In A Baobab Tree’ which is an African version of the Twelve Days Of Christmas.
In 2011 Polly Alakija moved back to the UK and is now based in Gloucestershire.
