Peter Bently
Peter Bently lives in the writer-filled town of Totnes with his wife and a perfect ready-made audience of two young children. He enjoys visiting schools and sharing his writing.
Inspired by living close to the sea, Peter’s first book for Macmillan was the terrifically toothy The Shark in the Dark. Staying with the watery theme, Peter has employed his trademark humour and mastery of rhyme once again to the fun-filled Cats Ahoy!
As a child his dad was an army bandmaster and director of music. This meant his family travelled around a lot. Peter says he went to ten different schools. They lived in Germany, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as places in England, including Devon where he lives now.
He has always enjoyed words and after university worked as a journalist, editor and writer. Peter liked writing funny stories and verses but didn’t know he wanted to be a children’s book writer until later in his career.
In 2001 he moved from London to Devon and started taking children’s writing seriously.
He joined a creative writing group and in 2004 took a course run by Arvon Foundation.
In 2005 he sent the text of A Lark in the Ark to fourteen publishers.
Twelve of them said no thanks, but Egmont accepted it.
Peter has gone on to write a large number of books which continue to delight young audiences.
