A story of environmental awareness, friendship, following your dreams and the notion that a good will favour may be repaid when you least expect it. It also encourages that no matter how small you are you can make a difference.
An adventurous sea snail with and itchy foot dreams of sailing the seas. The other snails chide her for such longings. Undaunted she uses her silvery trail to write a message on the rock.
Axel Scheffler is a master of children’s illustration. He perfectly captures the atmosphere of a little English port and the changing views of a busy harbour. The tide goes in and out and day turns to night, with lighthouse beacon and twinkling stars setting the scene for the Humpback whales arrival.
Julia Donaldson weaves a lovely rhyming tale as the snail rides the whales tail around the world. Icebergs, flying fish, tropical beaches. Dolphins, turtles, brown bear and eagles. Deep down caves where toothy sharks grins and colourful corals where stripy fish swim. The snail seeing it all.
But all is not well as the whale gets upset by the ear splitting roar of pleasure crafts in a small bay and swims too close to shore. Beached and in danger, the tiny snail goes for help raising the alarm at the local school.
“Save the whale” she writes on the blackboard.
With the help of the community the snail and the whale are soon swimming free back to the small port. Inspired by their trip the other snails climb aboard to join their next exciting outing.
Another colourful exploration from this award winning duo, with charming characters and themes which encourage being brave and embraces being different.
