David Melling
David Melling was born 8th November 1962 in Oxford. His father was a sculptor and David inherited his artistic talents.
“I loved drawing when I was growing up, just like most children really. My dad was a sculptor, so I was always asking him to help me with the difficult bits.”
David Melling is a best-selling picture book author and illustrator, best known for his hit Hugless Douglas books.
He took an Art Foundation course at Richmond College, and studied Photography at Blackpool and Fylde College.
Before creating picture books, David worked as a photographer and as an animation artist for films including the much-loved Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs.
” I worked for a while in a few animation studios. I learned how animators made their drawings move. What surprised me was not seeing it move on the screen. No, their drawings were busy running around and getting up to all sorts right there on the paper. They really did.”
“When I finally started drawing pictures for books I knew this was for me.”
His most popular picture book The Tale of Jack Frost was animated and shown on BBC1 on Christmas Day with a voice over by Hugh Laurie and was shortlisted for the Pulcinella Award 2005 for ‘Best TV Movie’ category.
His picture books have been nominated for many awards. His first book was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize and The Kiss that Missed was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway.
David is married and lives with his wife and two children in Oxfordshire.
